I was not so keen on the idea of having a site where you scroll across to see all of the images. It just seemed like a hassle for the viewer. However, after finding a few good examples of that format, I am more open to the idea.
thomastreuhaft.com is a portfolio website that represents a select few photographers, stylists and prop/set designers. The layout remains the same for all of the artists, and the scroll along format seems to work, and there are sub-categories for different types of work( like fashion, advertising and still life photography for example). I think it works because the rest of the site is so clear and readable, so scrolling across dosn't seem like such a fussy thing to have to do.
Clickable thumbnails, like on stylesoup.com are even easier to use than having a scroll bar for the same format.
i am actually pretty keen on the sideway scroll when executed well
